Tips For Travelling With Kids These Holidays!

Screen Shot 2015-12-21 at 14.07.13.png

If you are going away this Christmas – whether it’s to the extended family, or somewhere overseas for a family vacation – it can be challenging travelling with kids, especially over the holidays.

So we wanted to share our favourite tips on how to make that travel with kids that little bit less stressful!

Make A Project Book

If you are travelling overseas, or to a place that kids haven’t been before, create a fun project book.

Project books are a great way for kids to learn about the destination, too. Plan ahead, and in the front pages of the book, stick in a map, and some fun facts about the country – the capital, the currency – kids can even help and make it an arts project

Then, as they travel, they can use it as a journal, writing all about what they love about this new culture. It will keep them excited and entertained, and they will love collecting bits and pieces to stick into it.

These are invaluable later in life, too, when they read back on how they felt experiencing other cultures.

Try And Book Night Flights

Night flights are brilliant for kids! They will have been on the go all day, and (hopefully!) exhausted by the time they get on the flight.

This also means parents (hopefully!) get some sleep too!

Make The Baby Changing Bag Count!

If you are on a flight where you only get one piece of hand luggage, the baby changing back will count. So use it wisely!

Pack as much as you can for the baby in there, and use it as their “suitcase” – change of clothes, diapers (lots!), and you can even put some things in there for you too.

Lots Of Snacks!

Whether you are embarking on a flight, or a car journey, make sure you have lots of snacks and water packed. Healthy snacks are great, and the occasional treat, as kids will feel full for longer.

This also means they won’t be constantly asking to stop at McDonalds on the road, and they won’t have to wait for the airline food to be brought out if they’re hungry.

Snacks are invaluable!

If you don’t want them to have too many treats, make them a “prize” for winning a game (such as Eye Spy), or completing a page in a colouring book.

Leave Plenty Of Time

Take your time. Kids will want to stop off and look at things, either at the airport, or in the shops at the rest areas along the highways.

So allow time for this. There is nothing worse than starting off your holiday stressed. It’s your holiday – so enjoy it!

We know it’s often easier said than done with time, but try and be as prepared, and pack in advance (ideally the night before).

Also tell kids you need to leave an hour before you really do, and just get that little bit head start.

Then you will all have a great time before your holiday even begins!

2007_report_child_plane.jpg

Give Them A Camera

Kids love projects, and they love to feel included. If they have a camera, they will feel like “mum and dad” being able to capture the holiday.

Sure, you might not get photos that are worth of Photographer Of The Year (then again, you might!), but kids will really take notice of their surroundings, and look at their trip in a whole new light, rather than head down on the phone the whole time.

Try and give them a prize for the best photo at the end of the trip. They might even have to explain their inspiration as part of the competition.

Use Public Transport

You’ll be surprised how much kids really start to love travelling on public transport. Waiting for that new bus, or reading train stations as they travel.

It’s also a great way to introduce kids to other cultures if you are overseas, and gives them a sense of confidence which will be invaluable to them later in life.

Cars are convenient when it comes to longer journeys, as you can just throw all your luggage in, but so are trains for those long journeys! Perhaps compromise, and take public transport within the city, but a car to get there.

They can really get a better sense of where they are exploring!

Check Passports!

There is nothing worse than realising the day before you travel, that your child’s passport actually expires next week because it’s 5 years, and not 10 as you had thought.

So check, check and double check! When you book (if you are travelling overseas), make sure you check then, and book in to renew the passport that week if it’s nearly expired.

Check the adult passports too, whilst you are there!

Take Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are just as important as the passport on some trips! They come in so handy – after all meals, after public transport, after kids are just being kids…

Always keep these in your handbag, and you won’t regret taking them – ever!

With less than two weeks until Santa arrives, there is often much to prepare in the kitchen – and kids LOVE to help!

Here are some fun food ideas for kids for this holiday season!

Christmas Tree Cupcakes

5174.jpg-20150309013247-q75,dx720y432u1r1gg,c--

What do I need?

  • 1 pkt Betty Crocker Chocolate Mud Cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) water
  • Buttercream icing200g butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 cups (380g) icing sugar mixture
  • Queen Pillar Box Red food colouring
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • Smarties (for baubles)
  • Jaffas (for the tree top)

How do I do it!

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). Place cupcake liners in a 12-cup muffin/cupcake baking tray.
  2. Using a mixer, prepare the cake mix with the eggs, oil and water according to the directions. Place 1/3 cup of batter in each cupcake liner and bake for 20 minutes. Leave to cool on a wire rack.
  3. For the icing
  4. Using an electric mixer, beat the butter until it is pale and fluffy.
  5. Gradually beat in the icing mixture, 1/2 cup at a time. Add red food colouring gradually until you have your desired colour.
  6. Beat in the milk at the end to thin the mixture. You will notice it makes the icing puff up.
  7. Using a flat nozzle, fill a piping bag with the buttercream icing. Place a cupcake on a small plate and hold the nozzle flat side down on the edge of a cupcake and pipe to create ruffles for the tree base. Spin the plate as you go and make your circle smaller until you come to a peak. Decorate the remaining cupcakes.
  8. Add Smarties and a Jaffa to the top of each tree.

Christmas Cake Pops

external

What do I need?

  • 125g butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (155g, firmly packed) brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup (150g) self-raising flour
  • 1/4 cup (30g) cocoa powder, sifted
  • 100g cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup (150g) icing sugar mixture
  • 375g pkt milk chocolate melts
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 100g white chocolate melts
  • Silver cachous, to decorate

How Do I Do It!

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line the base of a round 20cm cake pan. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the flour and cocoa powder and stir until just combined. Spoon into prepared pan and smooth the surface. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  2. Break up cake. Process in a food processor until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Transfer to a bowl.

  3. Process the cream cheese and icing sugar in a food processor until smooth and combined. Add to the cake crumbs and stir until well combined.

  4. Line an oven tray with baking paper. Roll tablespoonfuls of cake mixture into balls and place on the prepared tray. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 4 hours or until firm.

  5. Place the milk chocolate melts in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water. Stir with a metal spoon until chocolate melts. Add the vegetable oil and stir to combine.

  6. Dip the end of 1 lollypop stick in chocolate then insert into a ball. Return to the tray. Repeat with remaining balls. Set aside for 5 minutes or until set.

  7. Dip 1 cake ball into the melted chocolate, turning to coat. Gently tap on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. Insert the cake pop in the polystyrene to stand upright. Repeat with remaining balls and chocolate. Set aside for 30 minutes to set.

  8. Place white chocolate melts in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water. Stir until chocolate melts and is smooth. Set side for 5 minutes to cool slightly. Spoon a little of the melted chocolate onto the top of each cake pop, allowing it to run down the sides slightly. Sprinkle with silver cachous to decorate. Return to polystyrene to set completely.

  • 10 to 20 drops green food colouring
  • 1 1/2 cups white choc melts

How Do I Do It!

  1. Line a large, flat baking tray with baking paper. Thread 3 marshmallows, pointed side up, onto each paddle-pop stick. Press last marshmallow on to cover top of stick.

  2. Place coconut in a plastic bag. Add 10 drops food colouring. Rub coconut (through outside of bag) to mix colouring evenly. Add more colouring if desired.Spread coconut over a small plate.

  3. Place choc melts in a heatproof, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave, uncovered, on MEDIUM (50%) for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring every minute with a metal spoon, or until melted and smooth, but not hot.

  4. Using a pastry brush, brush chocolate over marshmallows (hold sticks over bowl to catch drips). Don’t make it too thick or the chocolate will run. Roll marshmallows in coconut, sprinkling to coat. Carefully lay marshmallow trees on prepared tray. Allow to set. Gift wrap or serve.

Rudolph Marshmallow Tree Decorations

Rudolph

What Do I Need?

  • Large Marshmallows
  • Pretzels
  • Red skittles or smarties
  • Ready to Roll black and white icing
  • 100g milk chocolate
  • Greaseproof paper
  • Wooden board
  • String or ribbon to hook onto tree

How Do I Do It!

  1. Line a wooden or plastic board with greaseproof paper, you can secure it using cellotape. Melt your bar of chocolate in the microwave in short bursts, take out of the microwave and cool slightly by continuously stirring.
  2. Next, dip each marshmallow into the chocolate covering the base and the edges of the marshmallow. Place on the greaseproof paper and pop in the fridge to set for 10 mins.
  3. Take the chocolate-covered marshmallows out of the fridge and flip upside down. Put a small drop of the melted chocolate onto the back of the marshmallow and press down the pretzels to make the antlers.
  4. Flip them back over so the pretzels are on the greaseproof paper. Continue to do this with all your marshmallows and then pop back into the fridge to set for a further 10 mins.
  5. Meanwhile, make Rudolph’s eyes using ready-to-roll icing. Roll out a pea-sized piece of white fondant and then roll out an even smaller piece of black fondant for the centre of the eye and press both together.
  6. Take the marshmallows out of the fridge and add the red sweetie nose with a dab of melted chocolate as glue. Add the eyes the same way.
  7. Pop them back into the fridge to let them set for a final 10 mins.
  8. Thread some ribbon or string around the pretzel antlers and place on the tree.

Popping Candy Christmas Pud

5492a303-27cc-42c9-a090-2772c0a8641a

What Do I Need?

  • 150g butter (soft, or margarine plus a little extra to grease)
  • 150g self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon, ground
  • 150g caster sugar (I use Tate and Lyle Fairtrade)
  • 2 eggs (medium, room temperature, lightly whisked)
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 100g blueberries
  • 3 tbsp golden syrup (I use Lyle’s)
  • edible golden lustre powder (available online or in cake craft/sugar craft shops)
  • popping candy (1-3 packs)

How Do I Do It!

  1. Thoroughly and generously grease the inside of your pudding basin and set aside
  2. In another bowl combine the flour and cinnamon and give it a quick whisk (another time-saving exercise for you – it saves sifting)
  3. In a large mixing bowl combine the sugar and butter/margarine until soft and fluffy (I find metal spoons easiest for this)
  4. Add a tablespoon of the flour mix and the eggs and stir to combine (don’t panic if it looks curdled)
  5. Add half of the rest of the flour mix and the 2 tbsp milk -gently stir to combine and fold in the flour
  6. Add the last half of the flour mix and the blueberries – again, gently stir to combine
  7. Pour it all into the pudding basin, levelling off the top with the back of a spoon – cover tightly with microwavable cling film and prick twice with a fork
  8. Set on HIGH for 5 minutes, then set to MEDIUM HIGH for a further 7 minutes – let the pudding sit in the microwave for 1-2 minutes after this before removing with gloves
  9. While that’s cooking combine the golden syrup and gold lustre powder in a small bowl, set aside
  10. Once you’ve carefully removed the pudding with oven gloves, take off the cling film (be aware of hot steam!)
  11. Place an upside down serving plate on top and then – carefully – turn the plate over (still holding the basin in place) so the pudding should slip out of the basin in good shape
  12. Cover with the golden syrup and then very quickly sprinkle over the popping candy – some of it may pop off the dish – be careful
  13. Serve with custard or ice cream

It can be quite easy to get caught up in the excitement of the holidays, but it’s always such a lovely thought to get their teacher a little gift to say thank you for the year!

They don’t expect gifts, but that’s why it makes it extra special!

Hand-made gifts, and hand-written notes are always more special than something you can just pick up from the shop.  Why not make some truffles, or cupcakes, or hand paint a picture, or perhaps a flower pot?

Maybe give them “me time” with a hamper of magazines, chocolate and tea?

A great way to end the year!

Christmas Eve Boxes

We all know that the same question will pop up … “can we open just ONE present on Christmas Eve?”

Why not put together a lovely Christmas Eve box, so they know what they have to open the night before. Fill it with some treats, and some little stocking fillers, and even a note for them about the day ahead.

Pyjamas are always a cute idea, and even special things like a Christmas Book, or hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Christmas Markets

We told you about our top 10 Christmas Markets in our previous post, but they really are a great way for kids to get into the spirit, surround themselves with food, and lights, and music, and find those last minute presents.

Why not try and make a weekend away to a really special one too, so it gives them the excitement of some family time.

Make Your Own Advent Calendar

Advent Calendars are always so popular with kids, but they don’t always have to be chocolate!

You could make your own calendars with something personal in there, or make one for each other.

Instead of chocolate, you could put a tiny gift, or LEGO pieces. You could put small handwritten notes, or to make it a bit more fun – challenges and dares!

The countdown to Christmas is always one of the most exciting things to do for kids, so make it extra special!

Letters To Santa

How will Santa know if kids have been naughty or nice if you don’t tell him!

Kids love writing those letters, but why not make it into a craft project. Have kids paint a picture for Santa, or write a creative story for him, all about how good they have been that year.

Perhaps they want to write a sweet song, that you can record. If you have instruments, even better!

Get creative in the way you tell Santa about what you want for Christmas! He will be over the moon!

Go On A Holiday Lights Tour

Some neighbourhoods really go out of their way with the lights on their houses, and in their garden. And why not! It looks fun, and it really helps bring the cheer to the area.

Why not spend an evening with the family, and drive around to look at all the houses. You can take a thermos with some hot chocolate, and some Christmas cookies, and take a walk around the streets to really soak up the cheer.

You  might even be inspired to create a masterpiece on your own house!

A lovely, festive way to spend an evening.

Christmas Movie Nights

In the lead up to Christmas, you won’t be short of movies playing on the television.

Why not have a Christmas movie night!

Great some of those classics, like It’s A Wonderful Life, and those modern films like Elf, and give the family a festive movie-thon.

You might even want to stay up all night if it’s a weekend!

Grab some blankets, and popcorn, and even some Christmas hats, get that hot chocolate ready and start feeling the magic of Christmas through the movies!

Go Caroling!

Warm up those vocal chords, and enjoy some Christmas songs!

You can gather some other family friends, or just make it a special family occasion, and spend time in your neighbourhood spreading Christmas cheer to your neighbours.

You can even take a collection bucket to raise money for your favourite charity, so kids can give back at Christmas.

Caroling seems to be a tradition that isn’t as popular in recent years, so let’s bring it back and sing “Merry Christmas – everyone!”

Head to a Christmas Concert

Around the UK and Ireland, there are SO many Christmas concerts that you can go to! Filled with music, and performances, and food, it’s a really special way to spend an evening.

The great thing about the concerts around the UK, is that they vary in content, so whether you want orchestras, or kids fun, or pop music stars, there will be something perfect for you!

Donate Toys To Charity

Christmas isn’t all about presents…it’s about giving, and this is a great lesson for kids to learn.

Before they spend the day opening new toys to play with, why not spend a day looking through their old toys, and choosing a certain number to donate to a children’s charity, so other kids less fortunate can enjoy something on Christmas Day.

Charities like Toys For Tots are a great idea, or perhaps you have a local donation centre in your area.

Often, shopping centres have a toy drive under their local tree where you can pick a name off the tree, and replace that with a present.

The perfect Christmas present, is giving, and kids will feel so much better afterwards, and really appreciate their own gifts on Christmas Day.

New GPS Watch for Kids!

Screen Shot 2015-06-29 at 12.53.57

I can’t believe I grew up without the internet, having to use libraries – and now kids have their very own watch that has GPS too! Oh the times….:)

hereO has just launched this new watch just for kids, which is the smallest real-time GPS location device ever created for children over 3 years (THREE years….they are getting younger and younger!)

The great thing about this watch, is that PARENTS can locate their kids anywhere, anytime as well as receive alerts and emergency notifications. THAT we like.

It’s light weight, the battery lasts for up to 60 hours and it’s water resistant . It’s a pretty cool device for kids, and at least you know they can stay safe with the tracking device.

If I were a child again I would be super excited about these! You can get them through herofamily.com Christmas is coming everyone…we think yes!

Beth 🙂
