200 Years in the making in London, as Woodberry Wetlands opening on the May Bank Holiday Weekend!

Hidden undisturbed behind hoarding and sprawling metropolitan development, one of London’s best kept secrets is about to be unveiled to an unsuspecting public for the first time in nearly 200 years! How amazing!

Opening its gates for the appreciation of all on 1st May 2016, Woodberry Wetlands is a vast wildlife oasis in the heart of urban London and one of the most captivating natural spaces the city has seen in recent times.

Originally built as storage for fresh drinking water in the early 19th century, the reservoir more recently became recognised for its importance to wildlife was named a site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. As a habitat for an array of resident, migrating and rare species, the protection and enhancement of the reserve is crucial.

By creating public access to nature, the Woodberry Wetlands project aims to encourage understanding and appreciation of the ecology of the area and the important role that water systems play in London. A community engagement scheme to provide education sessions for local schools and a series of clubs and workshops for children at weekends and during school holidays will inspire the next generation of wildlife enthusiasts.

In addition to its inherent wildlife, the site supports important historical buildings which were formerly in grave need of conservation and enhancement. The Grade II listed Coal House, a former coal store and kitchen, has undergone complete restoration and will now be open for the public to enjoy as a visitor centre and café at Woodberry Wetlands. Two other Grade II structures, the Ivy Sluice House and New River Bridge also stand on the site.

Woodberry Wetlands will officially open to the public at 9:00 am 1st May and free tours of the site will take place at 10:00 am 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm throughout the Bank Holiday Weekend. As well as activities and clubs for children, Woodberry Wetlands will also host a wide range of outdoor & well-being activities, wildlife walks & tours, educational and craft workshops, farmers markets, festivals and more.

Full programme details are available from their Official Website.

What a great way to celebrate the Bank Holiday and (fingers crossed) great weather!

Beth 🙂
